Grup gsr has been in charge of the production and conceptualization

21/10/2011 - 23/10/2011

After three days of appealing presentations on behalf of the best chefs in the country, sales of market and regional products, dissemination of knowledge about the best wines, champagnes and Catalonian Cuisine, Mercat de Mercats comes to a superb end with some final results that make a third market fair likely in the upcoming year.

“The fair has grown and will continue to do so”, according to a statement by the Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, whom visited Mercat de Mercats accompanied by the Deputy Mayor of Economy, Business and Employment, Sònia Recasens. Mayor Trias has also said that initiatives such as this one are a boost to revitalize the commerce of the city and the country. As for the participants of the fair, the assessment has been very positive and they have shown interest in being a part of the event again next year.

The final figures of visitors show an increase of 30 percent compared to the first Mercat de Mercats. This increase is also reflected in the number of sampling purchases, which has undergone an increase of 20 percent.

The figures of Mercat de Mercat 2011:

• 3 days of activity in Plaça de la Catedral and Pla de Santa Caterina
• More than 230,000 visitors
• 48,000 food and beverage purchases
• 200,000 direct purchases in the market stands
• 20,000 square meters
• 5,000 participants in the nearly 50 presentations of the Aula Gastronòmica (Gastronomy Hall) and the Celler dels Summillers (Cellar of the Sommeliers)

More than 130 agencies participated in the fair:

• 34 stands of various products from the markets of Barcelona
• 52 quality and regional producers with products of PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) and PGI (Protected Geographical Indication)
• 16 wineries of wine and champagne from Catalonia
• 12 market bars and restaurants from the city
• 27 prestigious chefs from all over Catalonia
• The Costa Brava – Gerona Board of Tourism with a series of activities for everybody
• A well attended presentation by the Protected Designation of Origin of Ribeiro

The second Mercat de Mercats closed by meeting its goals: achieving better accessibility to the fair, in which everyone has been able to enjoy all it has had to offer and become familiar with Catalan cuisine in a more direct way. All through the purchase of products from the area, and a taste of a varied offering of our own gastronomy and enology, aside from learning thanks to the advice of distinguished chefs and sommeliers that acted as speakers in the Aula Gastronòmica (Gastronomy Hall) and the Celler dels Sumillers (Cellar of the Sommeliers)

It’s also worth emphasizing, the presence of recreational activities right in the middle of the Ciutat Vella of Barcelona, such as Havana singing, Castells exhibitions and Sardana dancing, among others, that have contributed to making the fair a unique celebration in the city. A fair open to all that has also meant a step further in the initiative to declare Catalonian cuisine as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Mercat de Mercats is an event organized by the Municipal Institute of Markets (IMMB) of the Barcelona City Hall and assisted by institutional collaboration from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Food and Environment, through Prodeca, from the Catalan Consortium of Trade, Craftsmanship and Fashion (CCAM) – forming a part of the Ministry of Business and Employment – and with the Barcelona Provincial Council.

The fair has also received sponsorship by Moritz, TAU-Icesa, the Costa Brava-Girona Board of Tourism and the Protected Designation of Origin of Ribeiro. The Catalan firm grup gsr-produccions de gastronomia has been responsible for the conceptualization and overall coordination of the entire event. Numerous institutions and entities have also collaborated with activities, supply of product, or with their labor.
