After the success of the first market fair last year, Mercat de Mercats —Market of Markets— is back. The aim of this fair is to promote the markets in Barcelona and the Catalan local produce. As the regulations of the Barcelona city council state, a tender had to be submitted for the organization of the event, which was finally lead by Grup gsr, the firm that conceived and coordinated the fair in 2010.

Mercat de Mercats will take place on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of October in the spectacular setting of Plaça de la Catedral and Pla de Santa Caterina, in Barcelona. The main objective of this project, along the lines of 2010, will be to promote the economical activity related to the country alimentary production and distribution, by spreading the several benefits of a diet based on fresh quality products offered at the various markets in Barcelona.

We focus on studying and promoting again the role of the Mediterranean markets and their influence on the economical, social and urban development. This new fair will become, during three days, the centre of Barcelona, a big market of markets and a meeting point for social, cultural and gastronomic exchange.

The main activities that Mercat de Mercats will offer are:

• Promotion and direct sale of quality local produce by the stallholders from the several market stalls, in addition to the producers and farmers.
• Tasting of market products cooked as tapas, thanks to the collaboration of several restaurateurs that will be part of the catering section of the fair.
• Tasting of wines and cavas.
• Live demonstrations of Catalan cuisine, with the participation of well-known restaurateurs and professionals from the agroalimentary sector.
• Activities aimed at children in order to promote proper food habits among them.
