Biscayan Txakoli surprises and refreshes Barcelona

Presentation in the Hotel Condes de Barcelona

04/04/2011

The Regulatory Council of the Guarantee of Origin Biscayan Txakoli (Consejo Regulador de la Denominación de Origen Txakolí de Bizkaya in Spanish) turned up for the first time in Barcelona to surprise and captivate more than 300 professionals of wine, catering and distribution. This was their chance to discover the typicality and originality of these different wines only elaborated in Biscay.

For this event in Barcelona, the Council organized a wine room at the Hotel Condes, in which sixteen wineries took part by showing and serving all kinds of Biscayan txakolis: the traditional white ones, the barrel-fermented white ones, the rose and the red ones, and the special ones: the late harvest ones and the sparkling ones.

The aim of this presentation was mainly to make these typical Biscayan wines known in Catalonia, a target market where they want to reinforce their presence and show their peculiarities after sixteen harvests from 1994, when this Biscayan Guarantee of Origin was born.

According to the technical secretary of the Regulatory Council of the Biscayan Txakoli, José Antonio Txapartegi, the Council had focused until now on the Basque market, but now, after some years of experience, “we would like the people from all the Iberian Peninsula to know us”, and Barcelona is a great place to start.

“We want to show the professionals the reality of the Biscayan wines. What we are looking forward is to break the myths that could be built around txakoli”, both Txapartegi and Elena Unzueta, the president of the Council, agreed to say.

Unzueta also emphasized that there is still ignorance about the Biscayan txakoli and that they tried in this presentation to pass on how it is produced, its unique features and how it can be combined with Catalan and international cuisine.

The Regulatory Council also bets on the foreign market, to which they sell 4% of the whole crop of the Guarantee of Origin. Most of this product is sold in the United States, “thanks to the idiosyncrasy and curiosity of the American consumers”.

During the wine room, 40 wine professionals in all enjoyed the two tastings guided by the sommelier Oatxi Zabala, in which the participants were offered a special pairing of Biscayan txakoli and a set of portions elaborated by the cooking team of the Hotel Condes in Barcelona.

At present, 50 wineries belong to this Guarantee of Origin of the Biscayan Txakoli, a product the harvest and first stages of which are still made by hand. However, the Regulatory Council bets on innovation for the elaboration of its wines.

The Regulatory Council of this Guarantee of Origin sells the whole crop, which generated 1,170,000 liters of wine in 2010.
