5th International Sommelier Conference (Mijas)

CIOMIJAS, in Mijas, hosted the celebration of the V International Sommelier Conference and the Best Sommelier Official Competition 2008

The event represented a step forward in the acknowledgment of the world of sommeliers and dining rooms as essential elements of contemporary gastronomy. Among the conference speakers there were important representatives of Spanish gastronomy such as Juli Soler and Ferran Centelles from El Bulli; Josep Roca from El Celler de Can Roca; Faustino Muñoz from Colmado Quílez and Dani García and Antonio Ramírez from Calima. Cocktail expert Javier de las Muelas (Dry Martini, Barcelona) performed a unique presentation with “edible” mixed drinks.

The Andalusian Centre for Comprehensive Training in Leisure Industries (CIOMIJAS) in the town of Mijas, Andalusia, was the venue selected for holding the V International Sommelier Conference and Best Sommelier in Spain Official Competition 2008, from 20th to 22nd October.
Presented with an innovative and very recreational design, the Conference represented an important step forward placing the Spanish world of sommeliers and dining rooms at a level of creativity and acknowledgment already earned by our cuisine.

The Conference, inaugurated by María José Lara (General Manager of the Department of Employment Training for the Andalusian Government Ministry of Employment), Antonio Sánchez (Mayor of Mijas) and Juan Muñoz (President of UAES – Union of Spanish Sommelier Associations), also included many tasting sessions of Spain’s best wines (Rioja, Jerez, Navarra…), and unique presentations by important personalities within the worldwide panorama of sommeliers, dining rooms and bars such as Juli Soler and Ferran Centelles (El Bulli), who respectively spoke of the of XXIst Century dining room revolution and the tactile synaesthesia of wine; Josep Roca (El Celler de Can Roca) performed a presentation on cooking with wine; Dani García and Antonio Ramírez (from the Calima restaurant) proposed very daring wine matching concepts with Moscatel and Old wines (trasañejo); Faustino Muñoz presented a new classification of 150 waters from all over the world and Javier de las Muelas (Dry Martini) amazed all with his “edible cocktails”.

After a tough competition that filled the CIOMIJAS building, Bruno Marciano was declared the winner of the Best Sommelier in Spain Official Competition 2008 (he currently works in London), and he will now represent Spain in the next World Competition. Runners up were Carles Aymerich (Catalonia) and Rafael Ramos (Valencian Community).

The Conference closed with a gala dinner offered by Dani García at the CIOMIJAS Calamijas hotel.
